A Ruby Ambrotype of Wealthy Man and Woman in Winter Clothes by Gorham & Tucker Baltimore Daguerreotype

An early transition of Baltimore Daguerreotype Photographer to Ambrotype photographers, the team of Gotham & Tucker located on 101 Baltimore Street. They had some notoriety early on with joining other Daguerreotypist in trying to get the right to use sidewalk displays for “Daguerreotype Specimens”. 

According to John S. Craig, “ Wesley A. Tucker also noted as William Tucker, Daguerreian over 101 Street Baltimore MD from 1850-1855. …. produced 2,00 images yearly. His name was first listed as Wesley , then in 1853-1854 as William. He Lived at 20 South Howard Street. In 1855 he apparently gave up daguereotyoing and became involved with Goodhard, Tucker and Smith, wholesale Boots and shoes. Making this early Ambrotype one of the later photos done by this Photographer.

The case image has the Studio’s name and address on the red felt, a very nice National Eagle logo is on the top with the Gotham & Tucker in a Cartouche. Interesting note is the Sky Light Rooms was a fancy world for good natural light. 

The important part of this Baltimore image are the subjects. They are unknown who they are but both of strong means. The fine clothes of the woman with fresh flowers in her hat and elegant fur collar. The man is dressed in equal fine clothing, his beaver fur hat is pristine and his jacket has a fine press to it. 

Condition: The image is near perfect with amazing and sharp details, you can see the pattern on the woman’s gloves. A truly amazing quality Ruby Ambroytype. The case has minor marks on the outside. Please see the images provided for more details.
