Charles Volkmar Oil on Canvas Landscape of European Woods Barbizon Style Painting Signed



Charles Volkmar Born: Baltimore, Maryland 1841 Died: Metuchen, New Jersey 1914
Charles Volkmar fled the United States at the outbreak of the Civil War to Europe and spent the life of American artists in Paris, studying landscape painting under Henri Harpignies, the work of Jean-Francois Millet and Charles Emile Jacque, and his work painting pottery and tiles in France, after which he returned to the United States and went into the ceramics business.
This large oil is a Barbizon style painting of a wooded area at dusk.
Signed Lower Right "Chas Volkmar after Francois"

Condition: painting was relined about 30 or more years ago. Some areas of repair are noticeable with raking light and flash.

Size: Frame 33 1/2" x 25 1/2"
Oil 19 1/2" x 27 1/2"

Appears to be original frame, heavy gilt molded frame.
