Early 20th c Inro Case of Oni Holding Hands Up Tobacco Case Moving Face Sagemono

Circa early 20th c. Japanese sagemono Inro box with detachable face. The sagemono is a term for the collective unit of an Netsuke, Inro and Ojime that hang off the Obi sash.

An inro could be used for money, small items and in some cases for tobacco cases, like this one.

The small demon, Oni, holds his hands up to hold the string, pulling his face off, the mask revealing the compartment.

The eyes are made of shell. A rich and well even with period wear to the patina shows the age. This one appears to be from the early 20th century, circa 1910-20. The legs, arms and face are carved while the body is a rawer ,more natural state. Typical of the style of the late Edo period.

No damage, just a very nice example of these stylish Tobacco pouches.

Size: 2 3/4 x 4 inches.
