Early 19th Century Watercolor and Pencil Mourning Drawing Stanley Baldwin 1833
A 19th Century Folk Art Pencil and Watercolor Memorial drawing from Connecticut for Stanley Baldwin.
These naive drawings range from memorials to celebrations of life and have a distinctive style in the North East.
The center figures stand by a grave site with the name Stanley Baldwin who died August 16th 1833 in the 22nd year of his age.
Stanley Baldwin was the son of David Baldwin and Ruth Stanley who had six children. Stanley was born in 1811 in the town of Cheshire.
The drawing is filled with imagery of mourning typical to the early 1800's. The crying mother, the weeping willow tree, the grave marker with words of " There is Rest in Heaven" and the style of drawing of the figures.
As you can see, the paper is not in complete shape, with the top right section torn and missing, the edges chipped and the page has been pasted to an early 20th Leather Folio.
The outside edge of the drawing has some other notations in pencil and pen. The right side has the name "Claira Hallam died August 4th 1836. In very faint pencil on the top section is " Marry A. Baldwin".
This piece comes to me from an estate in Conn. and they will continue to amaze you and me with some wonderful Folk Art and Historical items in the near future, so please keep an eye out for new listings.
