Grand Tour Patinated Bronze Model of the Vendome Column Circa 1880's

Grand Tours were a rite of passage of the rich in the 1700s to 1800's. These tours were in historical and religious sights of the world and would last for months to years for these lucky travelers. On their travels the collecting of bronze art piece, tourist items would be collected and often these items were above average in not common but small works of art.

Vendome Column was started in 1806 at Napoleon's direction and completed in 1810. It was modelled after Trajan's Column, to celebrate the victory of Austerlitz (Battle of the Three Emperors, was one of the most important and decisive engagements of the Napoleonic Wars). The column was a veneer of "425 spiralling bas-relief bronze plates was made out of cannon taken from the combined armies of Europe".

The bronze is a simple but detailed representation of the column with details of the scenes on the column. The column is mounted to a black marble base.
