1st published in 1960 the second edition was printed in 1961. Philip Whalen (1923-2002) was a key figure in the San Francisco Renaissance and close to the Beat generation movement. Closely associated and friends with Gary Snyder, his Zen Buddhist poetry was part of the growing movement of Buddhist type poetry, a theme also in Black Mountain poets.

Totem Press was by LeRoi Jones’s, Totem Press imprint published thirteen pamphlets, beginning with Diane di Prima’s This Kind of Bird Flies Backward in 1958.
"1957 Charles Olson, rector of the experimental Black Mountain College, visited San Francisco and gave a series of lectures on Alfred North Whitehead at the Portrero Hill home of Robert Duncan and his companion, the painter Jess Collins. Among the attendees at the lectures were, of course, Duncan himself, but also Michael McClure, Gary Snyder’s Reed College friend Philip Whalen, Jack Spicer, and Richard Duerden." 

Condition: fine with light soil on the front from storage. Binding is tight with no issues and the pages are crips and very clean. Please see the images for more details.
