Monoprint by Shelby Shackelford (American 1899-1987) titled “ Pont Aven Brittany”

Shelby Shackelford was printmaker, illustrator, painter, writer, teacher, and etcher. Shackelford was born in Virginia and resided in Baltimore MD. She studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art and with Leger and Marguerite & William Zorach in Paris.
Shackelford’s first show was for Society of Independent Artist in 1925 and was active with the NYSWA (New York Society of Women Artist), Provincetown Artist Association and other notable groups.

Pont Aven is located on the western coast of France and is a group of artists who flocked round Émile Bernard and Paul Gauguin, and whom Paul Sérusier, known collectively as “Pont-Aven School”, joined in 1888.
This small color monoprint printed on thin woven paper shows the rolling rocky hills that drew the artist to this isolated area of France.

Size: 4 ¾” x 7”
Condition: Slight foxing to the edges of paper, minor soiling to the over all paper.
Back of paper has price in pencil from owner and “364”, most likely a catalog number from exhibition or show. No additional information is available.
No conservation treatment has been done to this piece.
