William Henry Coffin Signed Watercolor Capt. Jacob Smith Ship Semiramis 1804

William Henry Coffin was a noted American Artist (1812-1898) that was known for Maritime subject oil paintings and watercolors. This piece, signed lower right, " WH Coffin" is a watercolor of the ship Semiramis. This vessels holds a place in history as a vessel of controversy. The Semiramis captain was Jacob Smith of New York who was famed as a great Merchant seaman who traveled the voyage from China to America, almost 3 years. The Cargo of this journey was said to be valued at Three Hundred Thousand Dollars.
This piece is a fine example of Coffin's work. The title on this piece is " A view of the ship Semiramis. Capt. Jacob Smith From Canton for New York Stranded between Nantucket and the Vineyard March 3rd 1804". Below this is "From a Drawing by Thaddeus Joy Marine Observer"
The water color is in very good condition, except for a small brown spot in the center. The edge shows that at one time this piece had a larger mat, with a slight discoloration from the previous mat.
This piece has amazing detail and is a fine example of this artist work.
The total frame size is approx. 22" x 27" and the mat size is approx. is 14 1/2" x 19 1/4".
