Yokouchi Kiyoharu Woodblock of Ishiyama Temple Shin Hanga Era 1937
Yokouchi Kiyoharu (1870-1942), also known as Yokouchi Ginnosuke, was primarily a watercolor painter of landscapes, before being a woodblock print artist.
In the 1930’s he created only eight known woodblocks. Part of the Shin Hanga movement, along with Hasui and Hiroshi Yoshida, who his work is very similar too, Yokouchi never fully moved into becoming a woodblock artist, even though his pieces are exceptional especially this woodblock.
The watercolor style of the woodblock with the fall colors of the scene surround the historic steps of the Ishiyama Temple. Like Hausi, the center figure stands out with the orangish colored clothes, subtle but just enough contrast and to draw the eye into the center steps of the temple.
Created in the Showa (era) 12 (1937 )
